The year in review (2005/2006) resulted in being a very entertaining year for the Canterbury Tamil Society. This was the tenth year for the society and everyone who usually helped us, wanted to help us even more. Thus the tenth year of the Canterbury Tamil Society was a great success.
As usual, the social and cultural functions brought us together during the course of the year. Thanks to the very contributing member, Mrs Thulsi Venugopal, the cultural performances were very varied and concentrated. We were able to attract a lot of willing and talented performers. CTS congratulates the young artists who performed in the cultural shows. We also extend our gratitude to the visiting performers. The following functions were organized by the society.
- New Year
- Mid-Winter
- Navarathiri
- Deepawali
- Tsunami Remembrance day
- Thai Pongal and tenth anniversary
Every hand helped to co-ordinate and /or teach Tamil language and music to the pupils throughout the year. However, we specially like to thank Dr T Senthilmohan and
Dr K Ganesan for leading the group. The pupils in the CTS Tamil school concentrated and learnt harder than ever, so they could pass the International Tamil Exams. This was the first time the pupils sat an International exam. There were two exams, one during the middle of the year in which the pupils passed and did really well, there was another one at the end of the year, we are still waiting on the results of the test. Also our annual publication, Thamilaruvi, was released with the help of its editor Dr K Ganesan, it was another very prosperous year for the Canterbury Tamil Society. The Christchurch City Council increased their funds to $2 500 and the Community Trust also increased their contribution to $3 200. With the increase in funding Canterbury Tamil Society was able to increase its activities. We greatly acknowledge these agencies for helping to make the tenth year of the CTS a great success.
CTS concluded its tsunami relief fund-raising by transferring the amount $ 8453.56 to Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (NZ). The total amount raised by the society was $ 53693.56. The special tsunami relief account opened at Westpac bank was closed on 23 rd march 2006.
