In 1995, a group of Tamils residing in the Christchurch region recognized the necessity for formal representation of their community in Canterbury. This realization led to the establishment of the Canterbury Tamil Society in the same year. Serving as a voice for Tamils in the Canterbury area, the society is dedicated to promoting Tamil language and preserving its cultural heritage, particularly among younger generations.
