Our Founders

The Past

Canterbury Tamil Society traces its roots back to 1995 when a group of dedicated Tamils residing in the Christchurch region came together with a shared vision. They sought to unite the Tamil community within Canterbury and thus, the Canterbury Tamil Society was born. Among our esteemed founders are:
Mrs. Malathy Nagulaswaran
Mr. S.Ilanko
Mr. S. Naguleswaran
Mrs. Tulsi Gopal

Their foresight and commitment laid the foundation for the vibrant community organization that exists today.

The Present

Since its inception, our society has steadily grown, thriving on the enthusiasm and participation of our members. We proudly host a diverse range of events, including:

  • Thaipongal Function
  • Annual Meeting
  • Tamil New Year Celebration
  • Navarathiri Function
  • Theepavali Festival
  • Remembrance Day
  • Christmas Picnic
  • Annual Sports Meet

These events serve not only to celebrate our rich Tamil culture but also to foster camaraderie and unity within our community.

The Future

Looking ahead, we envision an even brighter future for the Canterbury Tamil Society. We are committed to expanding our reach and bringing together the wider Tamil community not only within Christchurch but also across Tamil Societies throughout New Zealand. Our aspirations include collaborating with other societies in Christchurch to organize joint events and sports matches, further strengthening bonds and fostering a sense of belonging among Tamils in our region.

Together, let us continue to honor the legacy of our founders and build a thriving community that celebrates our heritage, fosters unity, and embraces the spirit of collaboration and growth.
